¿donde estan las bicicletas?

it wouldn´t be "katie-esque" if everything went according to the plan. i arrived in guatemala city at 430am and breezed through customs carrying two heavy bags belonging to two elderly women who i made acquaintance with on the plane -the plane ride felt like a family reunion despite the fact that nearly everyone was strangers...my first introduction to guatemalan culture.

at 7am angel picked me up at the airport. "do you work at maya pedal," i asked in my spanish...which was emerging on the plane with the abuelitas. nope...angel had never heard of maya pedal...he works at san lucas mission....oh...we conclucded that it must be some mysterious connection that neither of us knew about. we ate breakfast and waited for another group to arrive at the airport before heading southeast towards san lucas....amazing sights along the way -very similar to chiapas.

i let my mind drift as we continued driving through the lush countryside...i´m here...my adventure is beginning...it´s beautiful...where are we going? long story only semi-long i was in the wrong van, with the wrong people heading to the wrong volunteer site. wrong is too negative of a word: unexpected.

san lucas mission had me down as a pending volunteer so when tono called me last week confirming my arrival in guatemala i assumed he was with maya pedal...nope, he was with san lucas, an agency i emailed a few months ago inquiring about volunteer projects. needless to say i ended up at the mission where i have met incredible people have had room and board that exceeds all expectations of hospitality; however, tomorrow i will be taking a chicken bus to maya pedal because pedal powered production is where my heart is at this point.
